Within the Erasmus+ project “Digital Competences and Information Literacy for Librarians” (NEDLib), Work Package 4 is being completed through local training activities organised by librarians in all five partner countries for colleagues and library users.
On 23 and 24 April 2026, training sessions for librarians were held at Jūrmala Central Library, Latvia.
The first day was dedicated to information literacy and media literacy. The librarians were introduced to methodological materials related to information, information needs and techniques for processing and evaluating information. Using the CRAAP and RADAR methods, the participants analysed and classified different information sources and discussed practical examples. The session concluded with a discussion on the analysis of information sources.
After the coffee break, the training continued with a focus on media literacy. Special attention was given to the role of artificial intelligence in contemporary media and in the creation and spread of fake news. The participants discussed the advantages and disadvantages of AI in relation to their professional work and reflected on the topics covered during the first day.
On the second day, the participants explored fake news, manipulation techniques and the role of language in shaping news content. They analysed news from different sources and tried to transform them into propaganda materials by applying one or more manipulation techniques. This practical exercise helped them recognise different forms of manipulation and better understand how disinformation can be created and spread.
At the end of the training, the participants discussed how the knowledge and skills gained could be further applied in the work of Jūrmala libraries.
The training provided an opportunity for librarians to strengthen their competences in information literacy, media literacy, disinformation recognition and the responsible use of digital tools in library practice.
