At the ANBPR National Conference “BiblioPUBLICA”, held at the “Gheorghe Șincai” County Library in Oradea under the theme “Libraries as Multifunctional Community Spaces,” Ioana Crihană, Executive Director of the National Association of Librarians and Public Libraries of Romania (ANBPR), presented the recent results of the European project NEDLib – “Digital Competence and Information Literacy for Librarians.”
Implemented in partnership with institutions from Bulgaria, Greece, Latvia, Portugal, and Romania, the NEDLib project aims to enhance the digital and media literacy competences of librarians, strengthening their role as promoters of critical thinking and information resilience within their communities.
“Through NEDLib, libraries are becoming learning hubs and training centers for citizens in an increasingly complex and dynamic information environment. In an age of misinformation and digital overload, librarians have the mission to guide their communities toward responsible and critical use of information,”
emphasized Ioana Crihană during her presentation.
The project develops an innovative curriculum structured around four modules:
- Information Literacy
- Media Education
- Disinformation and Fake News
- Gamification in Libraries
It provides librarians with practical and interactive resources, accessible through a dedicated e-learning platform. Two transnational training sessions held in 2025 — at the International Hellenic University in Thessaloniki and at ULSIT in Sofia — pedagogically and technically validated the training materials, with the participation of key librarians from Romania and five other European countries.
In Romania, ANBPR coordinates the NEDLib activities through a network of five training centers (Iași, Cluj, Mureș, Brăila, and Bucharest) and ten key librarians, who will disseminate modern training methods in the field of information and media literacy nationwide.
“Public libraries must be more than just spaces for access to resources – they should become trusted infrastructures for education, participation, and digital inclusion. NEDLib offers us a concrete framework to build this transformation,”
added Ioana Crihană.
Through its strategic projects such as TELL – Trans-European Learning Libraries, Robo STEAM Academy, and NEDLib, ANBPR continues to strengthen the role of libraries as key actors in adult education, innovation, and digital transformation, while promoting European cooperation, inclusion, and the development of digital competences.
