Riga, Latvia: The National Library of Latvia (NLL)
The National Library of Latvia (NLL) is a state cultural institution of national importance, under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture. NLL mission is “Maintaining the significance of the Library in a changing world”.
NLL vision: The NLL shall have a presence in the education of people of all ages, shall firmly embed itself in the academic environment and provide an inspiring cultural experience, assisting in the development of a smart, capable and skilled society.
The attainment of the NLL’s intentions is based on five pillars:
- The Library collection in the digital age
- The Library as an environment open to growth
- The Library collection as a unique and irreplaceable research resource and research into it
- Creating a cultural experience in the Library
- Driver of library-sector development
The NLL cooperates with many libraries, organisations and institutions in Latvia and in the world with the aim of sharing professional experience and knowledge.
The NLL is a modern information and communication technology learning centre and has become a major stakeholder in lifelong learning, supporting formal, non-formal and informal education. The Library provides an important support for teaching and scientific work and educates users and librarians for an effective use of library services and products. The NLL is the centre of methodological support and centre of theoretical research and practical analysis for all libraries in Latvia.
Since 2016 NLL is also registered and accredited educational institution. Its Competence Development Centre (NLL CDC) carries out formal and non-formal educational programs for library specialists in Latvia and different educational initiatives and projects, based on andragogy.
Currently, the following accredited formal education programs are implemented: continuing vocational education program “Library, Information and Archival Studies” (960h) with the qualification “Librarian” and professional development education program “Basics of Library Studies” (160h). The Centre provides numerous non-formal educational programs (courses) both regarding professional and basic universal competences. Each year around 500 certificates are issued to the learners of these courses. Centre also offers other educational activities, such as think-tanks and mentoring.
NLL CDC takes part in educational projects, including Erasmus mobility and Erasmus strategic cooperation projects, such as NEDlib.
Main in the project involved persons are the Head of Competence development center Agnese Pasane and Field education specialist Vita Juraga. Both have years long experience in andragogy and education management. Vita has academic education in library field, her job in the Competence development center of NLL includes coordinating different kinds of courses and programs for librarians, as well as administrating Erasmus mobility project and other education related projects. Agnese has education in cultural heritage field and has experience in the work in academic institution as a lecturer. Her work in Competence development center of NLL includes advising the library field, teaching adults, developing new education services, administrating projects.
